Our Story
Burns Hall - Loyola Law School - Frank Gehry Architect
Our Origin Story
We begin with admission to Loyola Law School in August 1998. Lori moves from Santa Barbara to LA to a Pico-Robertson upstairs duplex with her good friend Janet. They need a 3rd roommate, and valley boy Billy responds to the ad. He visits the apartment and insists that one of the 1st things out of Lori’s mouth is a statement that she “will never date another non-Jewish man”. When Bill realized he would have to sleep with his legs bent in the tiny room being offered, he politely declined. However, Bill and Lori agreed it was so nice to meet someone prior to orientation, and agreed to meet up on campus.
This led to coordinating a wonderful law school study group, a best friendship that contributed to an incredibly positive and fulfilling law school experience. During this time, Bill and Lori & took and Ethics, Counseling and Negotiation class with Professor Laurie Levenson, we were her first law school class and she is an important and forever mentor to this day.
The First Kiss
In true form, Lori bought tickets for Bill’s birthday in April of 1989 to a Mike & the Mechanics concert at the Universal Amphitheater (remember that?) somewhat in response to Bill being incredulous that Lori had taken our study group cohort Andrew to Les Misérables, which he had never seen. Ultimately, Bill did see the show at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood with the original cast at a special showing along with his friend Dean and enjoyed it immensely.
Back to the show: we started the night imbibing in copious amounts of wine at Miceli’s. After a fortuitous run-in and quick chat with Chester Thompson (drummer that toured with Genesis), we took our seats and Lori in rare form leaned in and in a serious tone inquired “ Why have you never asked me out?” Bill aptly answered, being the good listener that he is, “Because you said the first thing you said to me when I looked at the apartment that you would never date a non-jewish man.” Lori doubts this was truly the “first” thing she said, but then proceeded to kiss him at the show, beginning our 2nd year in law school and a year-long romance.
Everyone in our law school section thought we were going to get married. This put a certain pressure on us and we started talking more seriously about the possibility, and how we would assimilate our religious backgrounds. Lori came from a culturally religious Jewish family, her beloved grandfather was a reform Rabbi in Riverside, California and had a huge impact on Lori’s upbringing. Bill was an only child from a devout Irish-Catholic family and adored his parents.
Bill wanted to work on it and looked into interfaith courses at University of Judaism. We always felt spiritually aligned, shared concrete inherent religious values, and yet didn’t want to disappoint our parents. Lori sought out the advice of Professor Levenson, also an orthodox jew, about whether she should marry Bill and advised, “you have to do what’s right for you, but if I were you, I’d marry him.” How life would have been different if Lori had taken her advice all those years ago! But alas, it was too hard for Lori & Bill to figure out how they would raise kids, Lori’s dad was very ill at the time in his final months of life (which Bill didn’t really know the extent of at the time), in true Romeo & Juliet fashion, they broke up.
They stayed friendly and celebrated graduation. Bill even came to Lori’s Santa Monica apartment for her send-off party when she moved to Bianicka Street in Prague a few years later in 1995.
Fast Forward
Bill and Lori check in periodically with Professor Levenson about what had developed in each other’s lives. Lori got married and had 2 wonderful daughters, Bill got married and had dogs (and also 3 endangered California desert tortoises, about 60 birds and a few fish).
Thank you, Bumble
27 years and a Bumble account later, Lori and Billy reunite online. Bill sees a photo and thinks, “Wow, that looks like Lori…,” and thinks “how much will this suck if I swipe right and she doesn’t say hi?” 36 hours and 12 minutes later, Lori says “Hi Bill!!! (add heart emoji)” Lori spent at least 20 minutes figuring out exactly how to best respond. Bill immediately replies, “can we get off this app?”
A few texts later, we agreed to meet for Italian food at Casa Nostra in Westlake Village. Neither were sure it was a “date.” Were we catching up old law school buddies or did we just reunite on a dating site?
Bill shows up with 2 very nice bottles of wine and Lori has no recollection of such wine expertise or prowess. He is completely different, yet absolutely the same brilliant and kind man he always was.
By the end of the evening, we both knew it was a date. Bill walks Lori to her car thinking, “She kissed me the 1st time all those years ago, so I’ll kiss her the 2nd time around.” We both felt like our lives had changed that night.
Lori invited Bill to meet Amanda and Jessie right away, along with her “to know him is to love him” rescue dog Tyler. Both girls were getting ready for a new school year, Amanda would be off to her junior year at Emerson in Boston and Jessie was leaving for her first year at Univ. of Washington in Seattle. Lori knew if the girls didn’t approve, it would never work. Unsurprisingly, both girls along with Tyler took to Bill right away, who wouldn’t love his kindness, warmth and loving spirit? Amanda invited Bill to her show the following week, “is that OK, Mom?” which warmed Lori’s heart even more. From that moment forward, Lori and Bill never look back wondering why things didn’t work out before, instead so grateful that we have found each other in this precious moment in life.
The rest of Our Story involves all of YOU.
